Hypothetical period

Structure consisting of two sentences expressing a hypothesis and a consequence. In Italian there is a hypothetical period of reality, possibility and impossibility. If, for example, I say, 'se andiamo al cinema, prendo i pop corn'. This is a hypothetical that is real and therefore will definitely happen. If I say instead, 'se potessi andare al cinema, io vedrei una commedia'. In this case the thing is possible so I use the subjunctive to indicate a 'possibility' in the future. But if I say, 'se avessi avuto 16 anni in meno, avrei scelto il conservatorio'. This is an impossible action because if I am not 16 now, it will never be possible again!

The MIXED HYPOTHICAL PERIOD is used when there is a past hypothesis that affects the present. In this case you use the 'se' with the CONJUNCTIVE TRAPASSED and then the consequence with the CONDITIONAL PRESENT. For example you can say, 'Se avessi suonato sempre la chitarra, ora sarei un professionista'. In this case 'non aver suonato' affects the present of 'non essere un professionista'.
