The study of the word that 'flexes', changing meaning. This study is very useful in understanding how word parts change the 'character' and also the meaning of the speech. In fact, generally every word has a 'root' and a 'ending'. For example, the termination '-o' in a verb generally indicates that it is the first person speaking. Or the termination: '-ino' indicates that something is small. If there is a '-oso' termination at the end of the word, this indicates that it is almost always an adjective, and the termination in '-a' in a noun generally indicates feminine gender

Singular, plural, masculine, feminine

The 'GENDER' is used to figure out if a word is masculine or feminine, while the 'NUMBER', is used to figure out if a word is singular or plural. But ATTENTION! In Italian there is no neuter, which is usually expressed with the word 'QUESTO'. For example we say: 'questo è Andrea'.

The rules are simple, because you just have to look at the end of the word and then the DESINENCE. So:

  • there is the FIRST GROUP where the ending is 'A' in the singular and 'E' in the plural. Some words are: la tazza, la mela, la barca, and so on.
