Comparative

A structure that compares two elements of reality, using adjectives, adverbs, or verbs. The comparative in Italian can be majority, equality or minority and it is a very flexible structure. For example I can say, 'mi piace più bere il vino che bere la birra'. Here I compare the action of drinking but I can also compare the intelligence of two people, for example I can say, 'Maria è più intelligente di Priscilla'. A tip! Instead of using 'di' or 'che' you can always use 'RISPETTO A'!

The COMPARATIVE OF EQUALITY compares two nouns by means of an adjective. To create this structure you use the adverb TANTO or COSI' before the adjective, and after the adjective you put the improper preposition COME or QUANTO. For example, you can say: 'Questo ragazzo è tanto bravo quanto me'.

The COMPARATIVE OF EQUALITY can be formed with either an ADJECTIVE or an ADVERB. For example, I can say, 'parlo tanto chiaramente quanto Mario', or 'Sono così bravo come Mario'. In this comparative, the words 'tanto' and 'così' are optional. Here is a diagram to help you understand better:

In the COMPARATIVE OF EQUALITY there are no major irregularities, however, you have to be careful about the structure, because these words can also be adverbs, adjectives or prepositions.
