Preposition

They express the relationship between objects and people, introduce complements. These small parts of speech are of great importance because they replace 'cases' in many other languages. They indicate various concepts such as: origin, destination, motion to place, finite and indefinite time, reason and purpose of action and also they give spatial and temporal information. For example, if I say, 'Marco viene DA Napoli,' I indicate the origin and that is where Marco started from. If I say, 'lavoro PER guadagnare,' I indicate the purpose of the action of working. If I say, 'il libro è TRA questi scaffali,' I indicate the location of the book

Some prepositions, but also not!

IMPROPER PREPOSITIONS act as prepositions, but they can also be conjunctions or adverbs. For example, you can say, 'ci vediamo DOPO', and in this case DOPO is an 'adverb of time' because it relates to the verb. But if I say: 'ci vediamo DOPO le feste'', the word DOPO binds the verb to the noun and then it turns into PREPOSITION.

Observe this image. There is a boy pointing to a mouse, and he says he is 'ACCANTO la panchina'. But what does it mean: 'ACCANTO'?

IMPROPER PREPOSITIONS are invariable parts, so they do not have 'gender' and 'number'. Their function is to introduce a complement, so they are found after the verb and before the noun. The noun can also be changed to a 'pronoun'. For the POSITIONING of prepositions you can see the diagram:

IMPROPER PREPOSITIONS can also be CONJUNCTIONS, or ADVERBS. But how can you tell the difference?
