Prepositions articles

ARTICULATED PREPOSITIONS are always used to introduce complements, but in this case they are formed WITH THE ARTICLE, which depends on the noun. For example, you can say, 'Oggi corro SUL prato', and so SUL is equal to SU IL.

Observe this image, where the boy says he sees something coming 'DAL cielo'. But what does 'DAL' mean?

The rules of articulated prepositions concern FORMATION. These prepositions are in fact the union between simple prepositions and articles. Here is a helpful diagram to understand:

c e g

In Italian, we can say that the preposition is part of a CONSTITUENT. The constituent is a syntactic unit that is therefore greater than the word. For example: 'con la bicicletta' is a CONSTITUENT and the preposition 'con' is one of its elements. So it is important to understand THE ORDER OF CONSTITUENTS, because not all languages have the same order. The most commonly used structures are:

  • SVO (SUBJECT VERB OBJECT): like Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. In this structure the object has nothing that makes it unique. In this way it is easy to lose the meaning if there is a shift. In fact the sentence: 'Mario mangia una tigre' and the sentence 'una tigre mangia Mario', are very different.
